Stamps Pound Lousy Riders – 44-22

September 15, 2007 · No Comments

This one wasn't even close. In a city ripe with Stamps fans it seems the pro-sports starved province of Saskatchewan continues to display their loud and loyal base. Despite the endzones filled with green (to complement the dots here and there elsewhere in the Stadium), the Saskatchewan Roughriders couldn't translate support into a victory. Things never really got going for the Green. Right out of the gate in the first quarter things could have been ugly for the Stamps with Howell fumbling the first punt (he's having trouble lately). However, the play was called dead and Calgary assumed possession from which they'd never look back.

For those calling for his eviction in week 2, Henry Burris put on another strong performance throwing for 5 TD's for over 330 yards in the air and 55 on the ground. Reynolds would finish the night with 150+ yards rushing as well. The win puts Calgary one point behind Saskatchewan and three points behind BC in the West.

Calgary receivers did their part to complement Burris' passing game. Jeremaine Copeland caught two touchdown passes, including an 84-yard bomb that beat DB Chatman who the Stamps cut earlier in the year.

Saskatchewan could have made it interesting before the end of the first half but Brian Clark anticipated an end-zone toss and got his first interception of the season (first for the team since July).

On the next play Nik Lewis caught a quick pass from Burris and took the ball 85-yards displaying his strength by beating two tackles, keeping his balance, and straight arming a final pursuer for the score.

As if the day hadn't seen enough amazing highlight catches, an unlikely receiver caught his first TD pass--his first ever. With the Stamps on the one-yard line Burris threw a gimpy short TD pass to long-snapper Randy Chevrier who came in for the short yardage situation.

''I've dreamt about being able to snap the point after on my own touchdown,'' Chevrier said. ''I thought it would never happen. It was kind of a cool feeling.''

Following a pair of DeAngelis field goals from 24 and 16 yards out, Crandell took over at quarterback for Saskatchewan and led the Riders on a 92-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard TD pass to Fantuz.

DeAngelis then rounded out the scoring with a field goal from 33 yards out.

Notes: The defence showed more signs of improvement albeit they has limited pressure on Joseph throughout the night. Calgary on the other hand only gave up one sack. Browner's number wasn't called all night--probably because he was shutting down the wide-out.
