Same Sad Story: Stamps Loose 24 – 26 in 2007 West Semis

November 11, 2007 · No Comments

In the end, the Stamps could have walked away with a victory, but instead, showed fans they are, and have always been, a mediocre team. Bad penalties, turnovers, no running game, and some dumb coaching decisions--the story all season--lead to the slow destruction of the Stamps on the field in Saskatchewan.

The outcome could have been much worse. But then again, it could have been better. Saskatchewan didn't capitalize on some favorable field position whereas Calgary did little offensively but still managed to put points on the board. It's fitting the Stamps didn't move on, playing with rookies and making rookie mistakes really proves other teams deserve to move on.

More Post Game Thoughts

So what about the team? Did the show up to start? Let's walk through the first two minutes of the game. Roughriders opening play-->touchdown. Calgary opening drive-->fumble loss. That pretty much sums up the game. Even though the defence for Calgary managed to score an impressive 117 yard interception return for a touchdown, they were torn apart in nearly all aspects of the game.

Against the run they were OK, but against the run of the QB they were terrible never limiting Joseph from first down runs once the entire game. Some interesting coaching decisions were noticeable, never were there adjustments made to spy the QB.

Other coaching snafoos? Sitting Brian Clark when Scott Coe's knee was clearly not 100%. Simonton playing RB took his spot and played a total of ONE PLAY the entire game for a massive loss on what should have been a 2nd and inches play for a first down. Clark may or may not have been a difference maker, now we'll never know.

The offence took to the field for only 2 MINUTES the entire 2nd quarter showing what kind of dominance they displayed all game. Two touchdowns by Rambo were the offensive scores, but the abandonment of the run in the first 2 minutes (Reynolds had less than 6 carriers) didn't help Burris.

It looked like the team would have a chance late pulling to within 2, but the elusive on side kick would not materialize. It's s shame the Calgary Stampeder organization blew all their cash on the offence this year completely forgetting about the defense then piecing it together up until last week. With a better linebacker core and solidified defensive system Calgary may turn into a well oiled winning machine like. But that's next year, this year, pack your bags, it's done.

More post-season thoughts to come.
