After a sporadic effort against Edmonton the Calgary Stampeders looked to redeem themselves against the unbeaten Alouettes who have shown promise early in the CFL season.
First Half:
The Stamps came out in similar fashion as they did in Edmonton. Montreal went the entire half with only one 2 and out and that was at the end of the half. Otherwise, it was all Montreal connecting for huge plays, tortching the secondary and taking their sweet time getting off plays. There was little successful pressure and the usual suspects a la Calvin Bannister was beat for Montreal's only first half touchdown. The only upside the defensive play was the single major for Montreal, but other than a Duval missed field goal, the score could have been much worse going into half-time.
Offensively Calgary had some 2-0's early but found a rhythm mid way through the first quarter. Calgary took some momentum with a long drive but Burris did his one-fumble-a-game routine and lost the ball when the field tackled him on the Alouettes 25. Joffrey Reynolds capped a nice drive early in the second quarter with an 8 yard run score and Sandro 'I like meat' Deangelis scored on the final play splitting the uprights to give Calgary 10 points.
Second Half:
Calgary started off the second half with the ball in good field position and responded as Montreal did in the first quarter by putting up points. Marching down the field off a couple key runs by Reynolds and Burris, Calgary capped the drive with a TD courtesy of an easy grab by Mr. TD Rambo.
Cavillo has been playing with authority for the third game in a row and continued by opening up Montreal's second half drive strong. However, Cavillo would exit the game with a dislocated pinky finger on his left hand. In came Brad Banks for one play in which he was sacked. Given the fact his non-throwing hand was injured Cavillo returned on the next series.
Similar to the game in Edmonton, Calgary managed to control the game on both sides of the football. Taking time off the clock by marching from deep within their own zone and keeping the Als offence of the field as a result, helped Calgary solidify the win.
In true CFL style the game came down to the last minute with some clutch second and long catches by Nik Lewis giving Calgary a chance to extend drives and keep the football. Sandro came in an kicked a field goal with 40 seconds left putting up the Stamps by four and ultimately out of reach for the Als.
A good win for a team that came out slow and looked to be heading for another loss with their mistakes at secondary and intermittent pressure at the line. Calgary will take their first road win and reassert themselves as a team with 'huge potential' and 'upswing'. We can only hope for steps forward from this win and not two steps back.
Notes: Calgary went without injury in the game. Teyo Johnson started his first game at slotback. Chris Jackson also factored in after being a scratch for game two. That meant Ryan Thelwell didn't dress. Two rookies started on the O-line: Tsoumpas and Newman--both played very well.
