Nobody likes the Roughriders, nor their fans. I personally think it's hilarious that Marcus Crandell, hot in 2001, is the best the team could come up with. (Forget the fact he threw for more yards than Burris and less interceptions of course
). Having said that, a team with mounting injuries and a crappy quarterback still manage to put up wins, until tonight. In five quarters of football stretching back to the last time these two teams met the Roughriders managed a junky five points.
Stamps Hand Saskatchewan First Loss
Although, despite their inadequacy on offence, they still managed to make the game interesting, in true CFL style, by making a comeback that feel short in the fourth quarter.
First Half:
Out of the game Saskatchewan received and went two and out. Calgary did almost the same but slightly worse.... Burris still gets it from Saskatchewan fans worse than Kerry Joseph which is odd. Is does however seem like the pressure does get to him. First series was an interception--uh oh, more for Sask to laugh at.
Luckily Saskatchewan had zero offence all game and the return of Jojuan Armour meant zero running game for Wes Cates too. Calgary picked away and started to create some rhythm on offence starting namely relying on the running abilities of Joffrey Reynolds. Total yards for Cates tonight: 20; Joffrey: 128.
Second Half:
Two TDs in the second quarter gave Calgary 16 points total, in fact, all the way until the fourth things were mostly going Calgary's way. Then in a series of unfortunate and lucky events, Calgary lost Jojuan Armour to a hip pointer injury and Saskatchewan got a monumental lucky break similar to the Wes Cates fumble recovery for touchdown. The play saw two Calgary defenders almost intercept a lame Crandell throw only to see it fall into the waiting hands of the Sask receiver. Couple that play with what happened on Burke Dales' first punt of the game, which was blocked and recovered in the endzone.
Saskatchewan hit 21 unanswered points and almost made a full comeback if it weren't for some clutch first down grabs by Thelwell and Rambo. Have to add props to Brandon Browner for a timely interception with 3 minutes to play.
Nonetheless, less a couple of blown assignments, Calgary put into a solid effort to hand an unbeaten team in a hostile environment their first loss of the season. Now it's time build with more wins.
Notes: Copeland on the other hand had 1 catch and struggled yet again to make plays. Zero sacks and only a few hurries for the Calgary defense who will probably fall to dead last in sack totals by weeks' end.
