It couldn't be a better, home and home series against the league's worst team (not by points but by recent play.) Calgary is starting to play series and dominant football on all sides of the game. Once touted as a quality offence, the defence is now turning heads and coming up big. Play makers are starting to assert themselves on the defence, and although they didn't face a worthy Toronto opponent, the improvement of the team is something to make fans excited for what could be.
First Half:
Things started quiet as Calgary continued to have difficulty on the offensive side of the ball to convert in the red zone. The first series was a punt single and then a three point field goal on the ensuing drive. Calgary certainly moved the ball well over sixty minutes, yet a more consistent start would be the icing on the cake.
Although Henry Burris threw only two more passes than Toronto starter Corey Pickett, he had two TD's and 60 extra yards. The ground game chewed up more than their fair share, but overall, statistically the team looked even on paper offensively.
Of course, the fact the Argos surrendered five turnovers, lost the ball in the red zone, and only made 4 offensive points (botched kick for a single), helped cover what could have been a bigger blowout.
Second Half:
hats off to the secondary of Calgary who racked up forced fumbles and interceptions. We Lysack collected his fourth interception in five games and returned his tonight for a TD. The D were even scoring on the offensive side ofthe things when Mike Labinjo caught a 1 yard TD pass in the second quarter.
The D didn't stop all game, and although they only sacked Pickett three times (only three) they still managed to break up plays and prevent long passes from converting. Offensively Reynolds had a 100 yard game again but was used sparingly until the last 3 minutes. The scary thing about it all is that Calgary still has room to improve and Toronto is so deep in do-do that not even Don Matthews will be able to right the ship in time for the next meet.
Notes: Expect Kerry Joseph to get the nod when these teams meet next week.
