Stampeders Start Season with a Win

July 4, 2010 · No Comments

The Calgary Stampeders opened up their CFL 2010 season at home on Canada Day pleasing the local crowd to an exciting win. The game was closer than the final score of 30-16, 7 points picked up in the final minute by the defense.

The first game of the season always has additional interest since it's the first time fans get to see the new faces on the team.

For example, new kicker Rob Maver stepped into the fold and missed all but one field goal attempt. Kick returner Deon Murphy came out of training camp as the number one returner but may have worked himself off the team with three fumbles.

The O Line were the other big question mark and other than a couple of procedure calls they seemed to be getting the job done. Time will tell how well they perform to open holes for Reynolds and give time to Burris.

Both had great opening nights, Reynolds with over 100 yards rushing on 17 carries and Burris over 300 yards passing. Romby Bryant had a 100 yard receiving game.

The story of the game was the defence that forced two fumbles and made the debut Toronto QB Cleo Lemon miserable. In previous years the defence was the biggest question mark but it seems, for now, the big holes have been filled and the offence is the one looking for production (particularly in the red zone).

Lots to build on, but a solid win for the Stamps who will face the TiCats Saturday.
