Stamps Eeek Out Win Against Bombers 23-20

August 1, 2010 · No Comments

Can't say if the score for this game was an accurate reflection of the two teams, or if the Stamps should have added a few points to their number. Although Calgary is improving from their debacle in Toronto 2 weeks ago, they still have work to do, particularly in the area of giveaways.

The rain held off for the evening which trumpeted the return of beloved 2008 WR Kenyon Rambo. Rambo returned from a nasty knee tear that took a year to heal. It started the game at slotback and registered the first TD of the game. Nice to see him back and we'll probably see him back at WR soon if the Stamps can figure out the import ratio on offence.

The offence can thank the monster game Nik Lewis had. He delivered in multiple 2 down situations and racked up over 160 yards receiving. Burris on the other hand started well but stalled in the second half. Consistency has always been his achilles heal, and two fumbles today (although no INT) doesn't help. One such loss gave the Bombers 3 points on the ensuing drive and took away a potential major.

Joffrey Reynolds only had a paltry 30 yards rushing, and if this team is going to have long term success, he needs to see the ball more often. Rob Maver on the other hand continues to split the uprights and is gaining some confidence from outside 35 yards. He went 3 for 3.

On defence the Stamps gave up the big play mostly on blitz packages that took the safety out of the middle. Other times they were the beneficiaries of poorly thrown balls to receivers who would otherwise had made big gains. The defence continues to be the bright spot for the Stamps, but more players need to reach their potential and register some big plays. I'mt hinking in particular Labinjo and perhaps even Hughes.

The Stamps left points on the field and will have to tighten up their ball protection. Championship teams do'nt give up the unnecessary turnover, which seems to be the MO for this team come playoff time.

But, it's the first third of the season and there's lots of football to play. ALl in all the team is exceeding expectations from critics and are mostly fun to watch. I can only see the team improving to greater dominance as the season progresses.

Next up, BC next week in BC.

Notes: Rules must have changed in the blackout game. Local fans were treated to a black screen despite it being a long weekend and over 30,000+ fans in attendance (not quite 85% capacity).
