The BC Lions may have looked and felt like a team that was better than their 1-6 record would indicate, but after Friday's beating by the Stampeders it's pretty clear, BC is the worst team in the CFL. Apart from some late game heroics that gave BC an extra 14 points, they put up negative yards in the second half. That's how bad the offence is.
The defence is perhaps slightly stronger, but staying on the field all day was too much against a strong Calgary offence.
The Stampeders are now 7-1, their best since Buono was at the helm in the 90's. But if you can imagine, the Stamps still haven't ironed out the bugs on offence. 3 interceptions and 1 fumble are mental lapses by the QBs that need to be ironed out completely.
Jury is still out with the Cornish v. Reynolds trade off. I'm more of a fan giving Cornish running time at the end of the game (albeit he was out with a slight hamstring pull) Then just trading off every 2 plays. Cornish is providing good numbers with limited play so i guess you can't really argue, but Reynolds is still the undisputed #1.
Defensively the crew own almost every league stat and continue to receive reinforcements and experience. It's only up for them which is scary mid way through the season (for other teams of course).
A couple of additional thoughts that may be missing from the Stampeder game. Special teams still haven't popped a big run since week 1 and the long ball is mostly absent from Calgary's game (the successful deep ball since Burris threw 2 for INT).
All in all the schedule looks pretty easy (Edmonton twice) so it could very well be 9-1 for the Stamps hitting the midway point of the 2010 season.
Notes: CFL stats said Burke Dales kicked a field-goal with 7 seconds left in the half. My PVR confirmed a short 'Dales' wearing the number 6 really did the kicking. Milt Stegal probably feels like an idiot for his week 2 rant about how Calgary was just an 'average' team.
