Chris Jones Jumps Ship to Argonauts

November 30, 2011 · No Comments

In a move that's certainly going to raise a few eyebrows, both in the apparent lack of communication, and also perhaps indicative to the state of the team behind closed doors, Chris Jones, the highly prized defensive coordinator for the past 3 seasons, signed with the Argos to be their defensive coordinator.

Why Jones would leave for an Argos team that's still stuck in rebuilding mode (the 10th year?) will leak out over the next couple of weeks.

John Hufnagel for his part was not informed by Jones or the Argos that any deal was in the works.

Jones lead a largely rookie (yet again) squad, dealing with consistent injuries throughout the defensive line and linebacking core, to produce an effective unit that gave the sporadic Stampeder offence a chance to win every game.

Jones perhaps saw the writing on the wall that Hufnagel was never going to relinquish his role as head coach, despite losing out respect in some players eyes by unceremoniously dumping veterans Reynolds and Burris late in the the season. Hufnagel has no plans to drop his dual role as coach and GM.

Jones on the other hand has aspirations to be a head coach, and with Dave Dickenson waiting in the wings in Calgary (can't see how he'd make the jump after two subpar offensive years) he saw a dual-head coaching role with the Argos as somewhat a promotion.
