Week 3 in the CFL and the Stamps are a perfect 3-0 continuing their dominance of the Eastern Division. This game was close until the 4th quarter as both defences dominated throughout 3 quarters. Teams should know by now, although Calgary usually comes out slow out of the game, they are a well coached team that will play hard for 60 minutes. They routinely pull out in front in 4th quarters as other teams start to make mistakes.
The Stamps, coming off their victory last week against Toronto, struggled to generate offence throughout the first half. Bo Mitchell, throwing over 90% last week, was off target early and often. This game only broke open when the D decided to step up and make some plays.
Keys to Victory
- Micah Johnson, who may be lighter in the wallet after a bumping official penalty, intercepted a tipped ball that gave the offence immediate red-zone position.
- The D held their own on 3and1 situations. The most significant a 3 and 1 on the 1 yard where Ciante Evans made an enormous tackle on the goal-line preventing a sure score. Patrick Levels was in on the tackle, albeit he was in the air…..
- Levels later recovered a football in the 4th quarter to seal an Ottawa comeback.
- Once the offence found some rhythm, Eric Rogers continued his torrid pace with key receptions including a TD in the 2nd quarter. Kamar Jorden had the other TD in the 4th.
It was the tale of two teams, one who could fight through adversity and make plays when needed to win. The other was right in it until they failed to capitalize on key opportunities.
The Stampeders have the weapons, and 3 games in, they lack the execution. A bye-week will help them square away some details and return strong, against Ottawa again no less.
