An all out aerial assault was launch at McMahon Stadium, with the victims being the defenses of Calgary and Montreal. For some reason running the ball was out of the question--these teams needed to prove they could win through the air. Don't mention that to Jon Forzani though, his back to back TDs (one counted) made the Stadium stir up into a frenzy!....
The hype pre-game was the return of Dwight Anderson who left the Stampeders in free agency for a hefty pay raise with Montreal. The anticipation was mostly for naught (seriously folks, since when is it big news that a defensive back returns to town?) as Anderson didn't factor into the game. He was largely silenced by Calgary's slotbacks Rambo and Lewis.

In an unusual twist of events the Calgary Stampeders relied on their 28 point first half to carry them to victory when their second half game puttered out.
The game wasn't actually as close as the final score would sugest. The first half was all Stampeders including an interception at the end of the second half that would've resulted in points had time not run out. The Stamps also had a sure interception that would've went for 6 in the third quarter but butter fingers Demetrice Morley couldn't hang on.
The turnover difference was one of the keys to victory with Calgary protecting the ball very well (no interceptions, no fumbles), vs. Saskatchewans three (2 interceptions and 1 fumble).

Despite a 3-2 record the Calgary Stampeders failed to register a win at home until this game in early August. Calgary and Hamilton came into the game sharing the 3-2 record. Both teams were in for a test; Stamps fans particularly interested to see if the offence would figure itself out after lackluster starts in the first 5 games.
It didn't take long to get the answer. After a Ti-Cat 2-and-out Calgary marched down the field and scored their first major on the opening possession this season. Larry Taylor on the pass and scamper.

Rene Paredes went 4/5 in field goals, turning his game around from the previous week misses, but also kicking Calgary to a much needed win over their Western rivals. Both teams have been struggling offensively, particularly Calgary early on in games. The offence tried to move the ball early but showed the same frustrating lack of execution.

The Calgary Stampeders like to play down to the last drive it seems. They also like to take a nap for 30 minutes every single game. They had little business having a chance to steal a victory in the last drive at home in part one of the Battle of Alberta.
In past year's the Stamps have dominated and embarrassed the Eskies. This year looks a bit different with a much improved Edmonton team and a vastly inconsistent Calgary squad.
The game could be boiled down to three elements:

They sure don't like to do things the easy way. The Calgary Stampeders played their last game at Canada Inns Stadium before it's torn down and it's a good thing because there were problems on the field.
The Stamps may be 2-1 on the season, but in each of those games they could've easily lost had it not been for shoddy kickers. On Calgary's side of the ball, offensively there are problems. Then again, every year it seems the offence has issues.

Calgary 21 - Toronto 23
A beautiful day to open the 2011 CFL season at McMahon. The sun was out, the fans were eager to see the revamped Stamps, and anticipation for another steller season held in the balance.
Too bad there was a mid-way point lull in the offence or the day would've ended with a victory.

Stamps 37 - Edmonton 22
Last week the Stamps, albeit playing with a hodge podge lineup, couldn't register a single point (tough to accomplish in a league with the rouge). Some the questions about offence were temporarily put to rest as the first team offence played the first half and put up some solid numbers.
Henry Burris threw well and scored majors, the O-line provided pass protection, the run game had moments of brilliance, and special teams dominated.
Defensively there are a slew of new faces particularly in the secondary that was beat for long balls a few times tonight.
Notable game highlights included Andrew Fabian, whom last week was working on his dad's Tilley, Alberta farm, and this week was kicking field goals in place of an injured Rob Maver.

The post-game won't have too much on the referee assisted win the Riders pulled out in McMahon Stadium--that's for this post on game fixing.
Dwight Anderson summed up the game in a Al Cameron Tweet:
Dwight Anderson: At the end of the day, we know we’re the better team. The ref put that in their hands."
Never have a I observed a poorly officiated game like this one. Rider fans may feel like the 'best team' won but in reality it's best to run away with the win quietly when it's blatantly obvious your victory was aided by officials.
Now, if you put the refs aside there are two reasons why the Stamps lost.

If you could describe the last month of football for the Calgary Stampeders you could use a rollercoaster chart. Indicative of their play, the Stamps have been way up and way down. Four lopsided losses or wins plus a win vs. Saskatchewan in between sum it up.
Last night Calgary absolutely thumped and humped the hapless Hamilton Ti-Cats for their 12th win of the season.
