Calgary should have won, which is good, considering the team needs momentum going into the playoffs set to being in Saskatchewan in one week. Tonight BC definitley didn't cover the 8 point spread and certainly didn't 'blow out' the Stamps. In fact, without the help of some timely calls from terrible officials in the forth, the game may have been won. A last second field goal attempt by Sandro Deangelis hit the upright from the 52 for no score, so in reality, BC needs to shake their head after this match up more than Calgary.
At the end of the day it comes down to this: in a meaningless game did Calgary show enough improvement to convince fans they have a chance they'll win next Sunday? I think they did, but here are the areas we need to have a solid 60 minute game in order for that to happen:
It was only one point that separated winner from loser, but on field events that transpired probably made the game of more concern than the score would allude to. Reynolds fumbled the ball twice after strong opening series giving the Alouettes 10 points. Burris threw 3 interceptions (one on a hail marry pass at the end of the game). The defence are probably the biggest cause for concern right now rarely making a stop against back up and third stringer quarterbacks. It's quite possible Calgary will face 3 straight embarrassing losses if things don't come together.
In the first of two back to back games between the two teams, it was Calgary who dominated with over 500 total offence on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Calgary. The return of Henry Burris proved to be the catalyst for a team struggling to find wins without their star QB. All in all it was a solid game against the top team in the East, but of course with every win comes areas of improvement.
Without showing any degree of promise, and with Ben Sankey playing 30 minutes of semi-good football, Calgary has parted ways with the once highly touted NFL QB Akili Smith. Jim Barker confirmed this yesterday. This also means Burris healed quicker than expected. I for one would give Sankey the start cause the last thing we need is Burris out longer......
At least it wasn't a blow out. In a game that saw a slimmer of hope that Calgary could host a playoff game the team ended up putting together a similar outing as the previous week vs. BC. The 'new' defence and a re-energized offence gave fans a reason to come out. All in all, it was for naught as the Stampeders dropped yet another contest with their starting QB Henry Burris out. A bit of a surprise comes out of the Stamps locker room today. It appears the firing squad has moved to take the life of the defensive coordinator following Calgary's buttkicking against BC Saturday. Denny Creehan has been fired, of course, this doesn't mean the defence will get better. I'm wondering what would be if the organization had invested a bit more cash on the defensive line......
