It didn’t start well but it sure did end well.

The Calgary Stampeders took the third and final regular season meeting against the provincial rivals stringing together back-to-back Labor Day classic wins. It’s unusual that the teams won’t meet again in the regular season.

The home-at-home series ended in Edmonton with another glimpse at a healthier Stampeders club including their strengths and weaknesses. Bo Mitchell back at quarterback for his second game in a row after returning from from a lengthy pectoral injury. The offense found yards when they needed. 2 throwing touchdowns, but also uncharacteristic 3 interceptions for Mitchell.

Edmonton couldn’t seem to overcome their adversity losing Trevor Harris early. That likely favored Calgary given the 3 turnovers that amounted to limited points. Credit the D, as the secondary continues to quietly display why they are operating as among the league’s best unit. The weaknesses continue to be around that defensive line, If John hufnagel is going to find any help with the cap relief from the Mitchell injury, it should be on the line.

It would seem at the mid-way point the Stampeders are finding their stride. They’ll get another test against Hamilton who are the leaders out East.

Of note this week Reggie Begelton continues his breakout season, a bright light in the slot back position. Local product Colton Hunchak strated in the SB position for the first time this season and the rookie did not disappoint.  The ground game was largely non-existent, Ka’Deem Carey running for 24 yards on 11 carries. Despite early adversity the Stamepders may be setting themselves up for a strong run to the post-season. That’s the time to peak in a 9 team league, as fans well know. So long as the lineup stays healthy, things are looking up for a squad that’s used to dominating and playing from behind in the standings.
